Qualicum Beach Museum Archives
Archive Treasures
The Archives store a treasure trove of the community’s memories that help to tell our history, acting as a repository for community records that document social, economic, political, and geographical developments in the area. The Archives’ purpose is to identify, acquire, and preserve these archival records for the people of Qualicum Beach and the surrounding area, and to make those records accessible to the public.
Our holdings include numerous documents from individuals, groups, organizations, societies, local government, and businesses in the form of photographs, correspondence, reports, maps, architectural plans and drawings, family histories, diaries, business records, publications, and audio/visual materials. The Archives’ contents range from the late 1880s to present times.
Using the Archives
Archival records are considered original primary source material and are irreplaceable. Therefore, we use and care for items in an archive differently than we would in a library. For the preservation and security of these irreplaceable documents, archival material cannot be borrowed and must be used in a supervised reading room. Researchers include genealogists, students, educators, writers, reporters, and people who are just curious about history. Everyone who handles archival documents shares responsibility for their care. Everyone using the Archives is expected to follow practices that will help ensure that the documents are available to future researchers.
